Science for Everyday Decisions #9: Disaster Preparedness: Jeffrey Schlegelmilch

CIES 2020: In preparation for 2020 Comparative and International Education Society (CIES)'s annual conference workshop titled, "Charting an SDG 4.7 Roadmap for Radical, Transformative Change in the Midst of Climate Breakdown", we are speaking with experts in the field of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD).

In a pre-conference workshop at CIES, moderated by Christina Kwauk (Center for Universal Education, The Brookings Institution) and Radhika Iyengar (Center for Sustainable Development, Earth Institute, Columbia University), the contents of these interviews with experts will launch a series of discussions among workshop participants.

Jeffrey Schlegelmilch is the Deputy Director of National Center for Disaster Preparedness of the Earth Institute at Columbia University. In this interview, he shares the approach the Center takes when it comes to educating, tackling and outreaching about disaster preparedness, to merge science and application/contextualization on the ground at community levels. He also sees the need to address disasters not just from prevention angle but from a broader sustainable development perspective.

("SDG 4.7. by 2030 ensure all learners acquire knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development, including among others through education for sustainable development and sustainable lifestyles, human rights, gender equality, promotion of a culture of peace and non-violence, global citizenship, and appreciation of cultural diversity and of culture’s contribution to sustainable development")
