Science for Everyday Decisions #8: International and Organizational Cooperation for Climate Education: Frank Niepold

CIES 2020: In preparation for 2020 Comparative and International Education Society (CIES)'s annual conference workshop titled, "Charting an SDG 4.7 Roadmap for Radical, Transformative Change in the Midst of Climate Breakdown", we are speaking with experts in the field of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD).

In a special workshop session at CIES, moderated by Christina Kwauk (Center for Universal Education, The Brookings Institution) and Radhika Iyengar (Center for Sustainable Development, Earth Institute, Columbia University), the contents of these interviews with experts will launch a series of discussions among workshop participants.

We got a chance to speak with Frank Niepold, who wears many hats in climate education. He is the Climate Education Coordinator and Senior Climate Education Program Manager for National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and Co-Chair of Climate Literacy and Energy Awareness Network (CLEAN).

In his additional roles as the Reporting Lead of Article 6 Action for Climate Empowerment (ACE) for the US government and COP 21 Delegation, he sees the need for international cooperation for moving forward climate education, as well as the education piece needing to become more central in implementation.

("SDG 4.7. by 2030 ensure all learners acquire knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development, including among others through education for sustainable development and sustainable lifestyles, human rights, gender equality, promotion of a culture of peace and non-violence, global citizenship, and appreciation of cultural diversity and of culture’s contribution to sustainable development")
